This summer has seen the launch of the first annual Slugger O Toole Political awards in partnership with Channel 4, MWH Global, Stratagem and Councillor.info.

The awards have their own dedicated website at www.sluggerawards.com

We want to reward better politicians, better politics and better governance as has been demonstrated in the past year. We'd like to reward those who have succeeded in reaching out to the public and involving them more effectively in local governance.

We would also like to highlight the good things that are happening right now in politics, and the awards will aim to reward effort and interactivity with a pat on the back from the blogosphere. A significant part of our focus will be on local democracy and will highlight those who have made local government work more effectively and more democratically.

The Award Categories are as follows

• MLA of the Year
• External Representatives (MPs, MEPs and others)
• Local Authority of the Year
• Local Councillor of the Year
• Up-and-coming Politician of the Year
• Stormont Committee Chair of the Year
• Political Blogger of the Year
• Participation and Involvement Award
• Journalism Award
• Local Newspaper of the Year
• Jobsworth of the Year

Winners will be presented with a unique caricature of themselves by The Guardian's political cartoonist, Martin Rowson.

Please arrive at 6pm for a prompt 6.30pm start. You will need to print off the acceptance page from this site and bring it along on the night.

Dress Code: Slugger O'Toole is a weblog. Inevitably there will be people there in jeans and t-shirts though we may draw the line at sandals.
